Ryan asked me to join him in posting my favorite songs of 2011 so far. This is kind of a cop-out! but this song has been in my head a lot lately and has touched me on a kind of deep level. very few songs ever slink into this level of my consciousness. I consider it my twilight layer. sort of puts me in this hazy, dreamy state- best envisioned by the twilight time of day, you know? when everything seems very unreal.
I shared this with someone I really cared about once, but I don't think they got it. I remember telling a lot of people things that hit me on a personal note, very personal, like when that woman punched me the other day (I survived!) that sort of personal- but then you're like OH SHIT, THEY DO NOT GET WHAT I AM SAYING. one of my biggest regrets of life is letting the wrong people in too far.
anyway, this song. the whole album Mirrorwriting is intoxicating and sensual. it's dubsteppy but also very soul-driven. and it's the good kind of dubstep, not the kind you hear blasting from clubs at 3 AM. this song is just perfect. his voice hits all the notes that just grip at you- this sort of longing, sort of hesitation. "knowing there's somebody in the street/it could change my life."
"And I'm wishing you were here with me, walking on a city street."
it's so beautiful and intimate. cuts right to the bone. you think that's in the power of acoustic-driven music, but, like Portishead and so on before him, Jamie Woon captures soul perfectly with electronics.
JUST MAKES ME WANT TO WEAR A TRENCHCOAT AND WALK BACK AND FORTH ON A SIDEWALK
so yeah: that is one of my favorites of 2011. you know my other favorites are Lykke, Foster the People and OH LAND naturally.
Ellie Goulding called Jamie "Jamie Swoon" and for some reason that sticks in my mind. ...
it was clever! sue me!

at first I was worried, but then you know. I thought about it and was like "meh."
