why i want to see 'the beaver' with jodie foster and mel gibson

Jodie Foster's film The Beaver, starring Mel Gibson in his first big role since 2002, about a depressive man with a legion of failures behind him who hooks onto this beaver puppet he finds in the trash, is getting rave reviews at SXSW. Rave! and he just got arrested, too!

Now this is a typical story of where you have to look beyond the artist and just at the art, which should speak for itself. Miss Foster is famous as a near-recluse, probable lesbian. Mel Gibson, eh. Mel Gibson's escapades have been tabloid fodder for years. He hates, um. Everyone. And likes to yell at his wife on the phone and threaten to cut off her head etc (is that Charlie Sheen? I am not in the mood to be excessively witty tonight, forgive me, I have been a vessel of seething self hate all week and it reached its boiling point today) etc etc. Well!

Even though I would probably be another likely target for Mr. Gibson's hatred, even though I don't agree with his lifestyle by a long shot (why would I? I'm not insane!), I want to see The Beaver. I want to support him. Why?

a.) I love the idea of giving people second chances. it's a big fault of mine. I give people too many chances. but isn't that the beautiful part of humanity? animals do wonderful things, but I think forgiveness and redemption are purely human qualities, and lovely ones at that.

b.) Jodie Foster is a pretty damn good director. from what I can deduce, anyway. idk- and Cherry Jones is in it and she's great. such an underrated actress (THE PRESIDENT IN 24)

c.) it looks like a genuinely good film.

so, granted it comes near me, I will give Mel some money. I really do hope things get better for him. if Jodie wants to believe, I can believe!

  1. I really miss Jodie Foster when she was a blonde. this photo kind of brings back good memories.

as for mel gibson I liked him recently in Edge of Darkness, but I was not crazy about the accent.
